Exhibition I: Portrait images // documentation Rick Rick is a contractor for USAID who works in Tallil, Iraq. USAID is the branch of the federal government that administers development and relief funds in foreign nations on behalf of American citizens. Because the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combine combat operations with development projects simultaneously, people like Rick, who is a geologist and water systems expert, have been deployed to the forefront of the war effort. To meet with his Iraqi contacts he must either convoy into town with the army or the Iraqis must be processed through heavy security into a meeting space on the army base where he lives. In this photo, he is standing inside a body armor storage container at the State Department transit facility in Baghdad. His wife and family live in Vietnam. Cy Kuckenbaker next |
